3G Upgrade FAQ

What is the cellular 3G Sunset Transition?

In preparation for the cellular carriers’ 5G network changes, all major carriers have scheduled the phase-out of their 3G networks to be complete in early 2022. This phase-out is for the networks that carry voice traffic.

How does the 3G Sunset Transition affect cellular units?

Some cellular units may only be capable of running on the 3G cellular network for its voice features. Units will need to be upgraded to have cellular access on the 4G network. If upgrades are not complete, cellular telephone entry systems may not be able to make calls.

Which products are affected?

The end user already upgraded for 4G data; do they also need to upgrade for voice?

Possibly. This information will be noted in the customer’s Summit Control dashboard. If the customer is unsure if their unit requires an upgrade, email upgrade@securitybrandsinc.com

What happens if the end user does not upgrade?

The unit will continue to connect to the Summit Control app, and they will be able to program the keypad and admit guests. However, the unit will no longer be able to make voice calls.

How do end users update their cellular unit?

If the cellular unit was purchased after 7/1/2019:

  1. Call Security Brands to determine if the unit needs an upgrade and receive a tracking form and shipping label.
  2. Uninstall the full unit or just the faceplate. Watch video.
